MapMyGlobe under construction

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

MapMyGlobe’s code is undergoing a lot of work these days. I will tell you more about it in the coming days, as I roll out the new functionalities and improvements. But what I can tell you now, is that I am feeling that I know very precisely what I need to change to make the app more efficient, more robust, and above all, simpler.

Let’s get this Project started

Monday, January 7th, 2008

MapMyGlobe got a little bit too quiet lately, mainly because I’ve been very busy with school and then had to relax and enjoy my Christmas break… but I still think this project can turn into something nice.

That’s why I’m looking for a partner. I’m looking for somebody who likes the concept and who would like to advertise and to make some noise for it. My goal is not to make money out of it, but if one day the app attracts a reasonable amount of people it would definitely be nice and rewarding. If you’re interested let me know.

Moreover, I want to release the code as open-source. If you want to have a look at it shoot me an email at mapmyglobe @ gmail.com and I’ll send it your way. And if you improve it I’ll be glad to incorporate your changes into the site :)

Link on Google Maps Mania

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Yesterday we were linked to from Google Maps Mania which is one of the main directory for Google Maps mashups. Thanks to them! I hope this will help to make MapMyGlobe a little well-known :)

The post in question can be found here.

MapMyGlobe goes Satellite

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

In addition to the Map view, you can now set Satellite and Hybrid views on your pages. To keep it simple, the “Set center/zoom” button now incorporates the view type setting and is now labeled simply “Set viewport”.

The Satellite view, together with the transitions described in the previous post, allows some neat animations. You can try this one out.

MapMyGlobe Beta is Alive!

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

I just put the application up on the “production server” - really a 10-bucks-a-month shared server - for the first time. I’ve been surprised at how straightforward the deployment has been. While my development machine and the shared host are pretty much the opposite sides of modern computing (different Operating Systems, antinomic configurations, own-machine-flexibility versus shared environment constraints) the whole application was deployed and running in just 10 minutes.

The application has been tested on Firefox 2 and IE7. It works reasonably well on IE6, modulo a few aesthetic flaws in some places. Independently of your browser, there is still a couple of bugs here and there, but those should be resolved fairly soon. I hope you like my application, be sure to play around with it and feel free to contribute!

Ready, Set, Go

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

I just bought the domain name mapmyblog.com this morning. I have been thinking about building a Collaborative Mapping web app for some time now and I finally made up my mind last week and decided that it was time to go for it.

I won’t tell much about it today, I’ll just say that it will combine Google Maps and a wiki system, however in a way that will be totally different from what WikiMapia does, and that I’m feeling really enthusiastic about it.

Enough said about the app for today. What I also wanted to share with you today is my feedback on the domain registration / web hosting process. I have built several websites over the last couple of years, both in France and here in the U.S. It strikes me that although entry-level hosting here in the U.S. tends to be more expensive than in France, the configurations are a lot more powerful and it is so much easier and quicker to have them set up and running. While it used to take about a week to have a working host, database, DNS and subdomains a year ago in France, it took me only a few hours this morning to have everything up, so I don’t know what the causes are (given that I don’t know a lot about registration processes and DNS stuff) but it’s definitely worth spending a couple of extra bucks in order to save time to actually build a web application :)

Enough said for today. I am looking forward to being able to release a beta version and hope to do it some time around mid-September. I certainly hope you’ll like this project as much as I do.

Cheers,

Julien
